EMDR Therapy Manchester: Trauma Work that Honours Your Neurotype
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based approach that helps reprocess trauma and emotional distress stored in the nervous system. At Manchester Psychotherapy Clinic, our accredited psychotherapists are experienced in adapting EMDR for autistic and ADHD clients, and others with neurodivergent processing styles.
We recognise that the way trauma is held and processed varies from person to person. That’s why our EMDR work is paced with care, rooted in trauma-informed principles, and tailored to your sensory and cognitive preferences.
How EMDR Works

When you experience trauma, your nervous system can remain in a state of alert, and distressing memories may feel “frozen” or overwhelming. EMDR helps activate the brain’s natural processing ability using bilateral stimulation — typically eye movements, gentle sounds, or tapping — while you stay grounded in the present.
Unlike talk-based approaches, EMDR does not require you to explain every detail of your experience. Instead, it gently supports the brain in unblocking stuck memories, helping reduce emotional charge and creating a more integrated sense of self.

What EMDR Can Support
EMDR is effective for many concerns, including:
PTSD and complex PTSD
Childhood or developmental trauma
Anxiety, panic, and phobias
Dissociation or shutdown responses
Grief, shame, or low self-worth
Masking burnout or sensory exhaustion in autistic and ADHD individuals

It can also be used to address emotionally charged events, patterns of internal conflict, or experiences that feel “unfinished” in your system.
Adapting EMDR for Neurodivergent Clients

Your experience matters. That’s why we adapt our EMDR sessions to fit your needs — whether that means less visualisation, more structure, body-based grounding, or longer processing time. If you experience aphantasia, require clearer transitions, or benefit from scripting and sensory supports, we accommodate that.
We respect all forms of processing, including non-verbal and associative thinking. You are not expected to conform to a “standard” model — instead, EMDR is shaped around you.

Integrated Trauma Therapy in Manchester
Our EMDR work is embedded within a broader trauma-informed and IFS-informed framework. This allows us to support all parts of your internal system with curiosity, consent, and care — rather than pushing for rapid results.
Our Manchester city centre clinic is sensory-considerate and therapist-led. Online EMDR is also available.
