What is an End-of-Life Doula?

As an End-of-Life Doula, I serve as a compassionate companion, offering support to individuals and families during one of life’s most profound transitions. I work with those who are terminally ill or have a life-limiting diagnosis, helping them navigate their emotional, practical, social, and spiritual needs.

My role is to hold space for the dying, to ensure their wishes are heard and respected, and to help ease the fear and uncertainty that often accompany the dying process. I'm here to provide comfort, guidance, and a steady presence to make this journey feel a little less daunting.

Family Support

I acknowledge the term ‘family’ in the widest sense. For some, this may mean a birth family, a chosen family, or a community of loved ones around an individual. I may act as a bridge between the person nearing the end of life and the people around them.

I understand that this time can be deeply emotional and overwhelming for families. That’s where I come in—to help facilitate the creation of a safe, supportive space for grief, uncertainty, and anticipatory loss. My goal is to be a steady, compassionate presence, supporting families or individuals with empathy and care as they move through this experience.

For some, there may be no support around. For those without a network or community, we can hold space to ensure their voice is heard.

Coping with Grief

As death approaches, anticipatory grief often sets in—for both the dying person and their loved ones. It can be incredibly difficult to witness the physical and cognitive changes that occur near the end of life.

I approach this tender time with gentleness and deep compassion. I hold space for all the complex emotions that arise—grief, fear, sadness, even relief. I make sure loved ones feel heard, seen, and supported. By being fully present, I encourage open conversations about grief, help loved ones share their thoughts and memories, and walk together through this deeply human experience.

What does support look like?

Each enquiry is a bespoke conversation. This can range from a one-off session to more regular or in-depth support. Support can be provided at our offices in Manchester, online, or in some cases through home visits.

My Background

Having taken a diploma studying Doula support at end of life, I am now a certified trainer, teaching others to be end-of-life companions and Doulas. I am a member of End of Life Doula UK and adhere to their code of ethics, with regular CPD, mentorship, and reflective practice to ensure I can be fully present for those needing support and work within ethical guidelines.
